Kuranda Scenic Railway (KSR) aims to provide an inclusive experience for all passengers, regardless of their ability or needs. They offer an accessible carriage on every service to accommodate individuals with disabilities. However, it's important to note that as a heritage-style service, there are certain considerations to take into account when planning a journey with KSR.

To ensure a seamless and personalized experience, passengers are encouraged to contact KSR in advance at 1800 KSRAIL (577 245) in Australia or +61 7 4231 9045 outside Australia. Providing specific journey requirements at the time of booking allows KSR to better assist passengers.

On the day of travel, passengers are requested to notify KSR's station staff upon arrival for further support. KSR understands that customers with disabilities may face challenges with stairs or gaps between the train and the platform. Therefore, they recommend utilizing the accessible carriage, where boarding assistance will be provided.

Kuranda Scenic Railway is designed to be accessible for individuals using various mobility devices such as walking frames, wheelchairs, and mobility scooters. However, it's important to be aware that platform heights, station facilities, and access may vary. Passengers are advised to review relevant station information when planning their journey.

During the journey, the accessible carriage offers four designated spaces for wheelchair or mobility scooter users. Passengers have the option to remain in their mobility device or transfer to a seat. If choosing to transfer, it's important to note that the seats in the accessible carriage have a fixed "u" shaped back and armrest. Assistance from a companion or carer may be required during the transfer process.

Seats near the accessible spaces can be booked for companions and carers (refer to Fare Rules for details). Some of these seats may face backward, as they cannot be turned. Passengers who prefer to stay in their mobility device can secure it using tie-down straps or the device's braking mechanism. KSR recommends using the tie-down straps due to the steep incline experienced during the journey.

The accessible carriage and spaces are located within the Gold Class seating area. In addition to the designated spaces, passengers can also choose to travel in their mobility device or transfer to a Gold Class seat. Carers or companions are welcome to travel alongside the passenger.

KSR's staff is available to provide assistance throughout the journey. Passengers are advised to inform their consultant of any specific assistance required during the booking process. Onboard staff can assist with boarding, guiding passengers to and from seats or accessible spaces, directing them to the toilet facility entrance, and carrying small hand-held luggage (up to 7kg) or mobility aids weighing under 20kg, such as walking frames or canes.

However, there are certain limitations to the assistance KSR can provide. Staff members are unable to drive or push large mobility devices up ramps, lift passengers, carry large carry-on luggage items over 7kg, assist with food and beverage consumption, administer injections or medication, or provide personal care, such as emptying colostomy bags or urine bottles.

Kuranda Scenic Railway is committed to ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for all passengers. Passengers are encouraged to communicate any additional requirements, and KSR's staff will make every effort to assist within the operational capabilities.
