What to Expect

Immerse yourself in one of the most spectacular coastlines in the Southern Hemisphere on this multi-day adventure. Walk on top of Australia's highest sea cliffs, cruise around dramatic dolomite rock formations rising from the ocean, tread lightly through ancient rainforest, and unravel the gruelling convict history at the World Heritage-listed Port Arthur Historic Site.

This is no ordinary tour. To give you a deeper insight into this rare and remarkable landscape, you'll be joined by specialist expert guides, including ecologists, geologists, botanists and historians, keen to share their wisdom and passion. This unexpected adventure is the perfect opportunity to connect with like-minded people who share your curiosity and love for nature, for an experience you will never forget.

Day 1

Start the day early with pick-ups from your Hobart CBD hotel or the central meeting point. Then travel south to hike the spectacular Cape Raoul with a geologist as they share their knowledge of the doleritecape. Expect jaw-dropping views, seabirds and a delicious packed lunch. This Grade 4 walk is 14 kilometres and takes around 6 hrs, so some bushwalking experience is recommended. However, it's the ideal way to start your tour and get the blood flowing.

Enjoy dinner at your accommodation for the next three nights, Port Arthur Lodge, where you will have a private room and time to unwind in the relaxed shared spaces.

Day 2

Today boasts some shorter walks plus the chance to take a step back in time, with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the notorious Port Arthur Historic Site. This experience is led by a historian who delves into the fascinating convict history. The tour is topped off with a harbour cruise to the notorious Isle of the Dead.

Then, venture into a unique eucalypt forest with an ecologist. Walk between these beautiful giants as you learn about the significance of the forest in relation to global ecological changes.

Day 3

Stretch your legs again with a hike to Cape Hauy, part of the world-famous Three Capes Walk with an ecologist. It's a 9.4 kilometre Grade 3 journey that will take around 5 hrs to complete.

This stunning walk will be etched into your memory forever. The cape juts out into the ocean with 360-degree views. Dolerite columns plunge into the sea. Keep an eye out for brave rock climbers, soaring eagles, and even passing whales.

Day 4

Your final day is a little more leisurely, though no less exciting. See the coastline from a different perspective on a Pennicott Wilderness boat tour. This unforgettable 3 hr cruise travels beneath the high seacliffs exploring waterfalls, archways, rock formations and deep-sea caves. Get up close to seals as they bask on the rocks and watch for dolphins.

Then, sample local wines and have a delicious lunch at Bangor Vineyard Shed, before heading back to Hobart.

Frequently Asked Questions

More important than age is attitude. The Operator has found over the years that if you have a curious temperament and a thirst for adventure, then age is no barrier for any of the tours. However, they ask that children please be accompanied by an adult.

While Hobart is Australia’s second-driest capital city, Tasmania can quite literally experience four seasons in one day. As a result, The Operator recommends that you bring a sunhat, beanie, sunscreen and a waterproof jacket. In addition, wear layers, preferably quick-drying material. They also recommend comfortable shoes or boots for walking.

The Operator often has vegetarian/vegan guests, and all cafes and restaurants in Tasmania offer these options. If you can’t see any on the menu, just ask, as most places will happily prepare something for you.

Please let The Operator know in the ‘Special Requirements’ section on the booking form if you have any food allergies. They can then arrange for your tour guide to have the right cereal, milk and bread available for breakfast on day one. Your tour guide can then purchase more supplies as you travel around. If you have severe allergies, please bring an Epi-Pen with you.

You can also bring a day pack in the van. If you will have more luggage than this, please send The Operator an email, and they can check if there will be room in the trailer for any extra bags.
